After 5 and a half years of trading, Wobble is now closed.

We have been servicing all of NZ since 2006 via the web, but we are unable to retain the support of our key suppliers (after closing our retail store) to keep providing the great products and services that you are used to. Strangely many suppliers believe a retail store is required to provide the right service over the web.

The Wobble brand has always signified quality and we are not willing to sacrifice this just to keep the business rolling. We want the best for your children because we are mothers too, and know first hand that not all products are created equal.

We have really enjoyed having you as a customer and hope that you have enjoyed shopping with us. We have received hundreds of glowing testimonials and had so much customer feedback, that we know many of you will be upset by this news.

Trunki

I got my 3 girls a Trunki each last Xmas and they loved them. My eldest told me it was the best of all the presents she got (even over the XBOX!). I thought they would just use them when we went away but they play with them heaps. They often form a convoy that travels down the hall or use them when they play house. They were 6, 5 and 15 months old at Xmas and I can't even say they are more suited to a certain age. Jade (now 7) loves to go on sleepovers with her Trunki and her friends are mesmerised by it. When we stay in hotels, they look super cute all pulling their Trunki behind them or riding past reception.

For travelling overseas they are great because the kids all have somewhere to sit in those long lines and you can use the strap to pull them along if they get tired. They are invincible if my kids haven't managed to break them with all they put them through. They are certainly built to last.

New inline Mountain Buggy

Mountain Buggy have had plans for an inline buggy for years and they have finally done it. The new Mountain Buggy Plus One, or + one, is a revolutionary buggy for parents with 2 children.

I take heaps of photos of my kids, but I thought it would be nice to get some professional ones taken so that I could get some canvases done for the walls. I had seen some of Karyns work and thought it was great, so we set off to Te Awamutu one Saturday morning. The session was very painless and seemed to fly by. I wasn't sure how many good pics would result as its really hard to get 3 kids to sit still on a good day, let alone smile on queue. Karyn has some special tricks and they obviously paid off as "to my surprise" there were so many good pics, I strugged to pick the best.

I think my kids are cute, but I am biased and allowed to be :) Here are a few pics so you can see the results.

Bugaboo Donkey

We have been hearing rumours of a double buggy from Bugaboo for about 4 years now. Well it looks like it is finally on its way and its called the Bugaboo Donkey.

The best thing about this buggy is it converts from a single to a double, allowing it to be used as a single before and after its used as a double, smart design again from Bugaboo.

Booster Seats

There is currently a big push to get kids back into their booster seats over the age of 5. New Zealand carseat laws say its ok for children to use an adult seat belt and not have a booster from the age of 5, but there is plenty of information to say this is not safe.

To safely use an adult seat belt, a child needs to be taller than 148cm.

Ninety percent of children between six and eight (the age group with the highest number of injuries at Starship) should also still be in booster seats. As should 50% of nine and 10-year-olds and even a small percentage of 11 and 12-year-olds.

Researchers at Starship's Intensive Care Unit say they are seeing children suffer unnecessary injuries because they are not restrained properly. Some of these injuries are devastating head injuries, broken necks, broken spinal cords, ruptures spleens and livers. Injuries, they say could be cut by more than 60% if children stay in carseats past the legal requirement of their 5th birthday.

There are many people that are pushing for the law in New Zealand to be changed. States in Australia have already started to enforce a law to keep kids in their boosters until they are at least 7 years old.

The New Zealand Minister of Transport announced in March 2010 that the Ministry will make booster seats an action item in its new ten year road safety strategy, Safer Journeys. As stated in the strategy, the Minister’s aim is to increase the level of restraint use by achieving a correct use and fitting rate of 90% for child restraints, and make the use of booster seats the norm for children aged 5 to 10.

New Zealand has one of the highest child road fatality rates in the OECD, and part of this is due to the lack or incorrect use of child car restraints, and current limitations on the mandatory use of restraints beyond the age of 5.

New Mountain Buggy Models

From Dec 09, new models of Mountain Buggy will be available. The changes are quite subtle, so don't think that the buggy you have grown to love is going to be lost forever.

The Single Urban is now called the Urban Jungle and the double is called the Duo. The Elite models have all been discontinued, along with the terrain & triple buggies.

The main changes are -

The wheelbase has been made narrower
The sunhoods have been made bigger and smarter
The harnesses have been enhanced
Bumper bars are included
The Swift now has a carrycot option
The Duo has individual sunhoods (rather than 1 large one)
The Urban Jungle suncover zips directly onto the hood
New colours for the Urban Jungle and Duo

We don't know if there will be price changes yet but we will have our website updated with the latest info as soon as the buggies release.

Amber teething necklaces

There are some things that we don't completely understand but know they just work. Aloe Vera would be a good example of this, if you have a burn, its the best thing to take away the sting. About 15 years ago I got funny looks from my flatmates when I cut a leaf off my Aloe plant and put it on my thumb. Now days you buy it in a bottle and its not so strange.

Amber Necklaces fall into this category for some people at the moment. I have got some funny looks when someone has asked what my daughters necklace is and I tell them that it stops her Eczema.

We were approached by a lady and asked if we would sell her Amber teething necklaces in our store. She said they also are known to help allergies and eczema. I was hesitant but I told her if the necklace got rid of my daughters eczema we would sell them. I had been using liquorice cream to keep it from getting really bad, but it was still there and I had to keep applying it twice a day. I asked the lady how long it would take the necklace to work and she told me a couple of weeks. Within 2 days I had stopped with the cream and her eczema just went away.I didn't get it for teething but I did notice that she didn't complain when a tooth came through. I could tell she was teething as she still had the dribble but I saved myself quite a bit of money in teething remedies.

She is almost 4 and she still wears her necklace. If I take it off, the eczema comes back. I have also learned that products like Vicks should not be used when the necklace is on. I had to buy another necklace after I had been applying Vicks to her for about a week. I think it got into the necklace as her eczema returned. The new necklace sorted it out again so just be careful with products around them.

If the child is going into the bath, remove the necklace as soaps etc may do the same thing. They say you can recharge the necklace putting it in the light of sunset or sunrise. Another method is to run it under cold water.

Bugaboo Cameleon

The Bugaboo is one of the most innovative buggies on the market.

The first Bugaboo was invented in the 90's by a guy in the Netherlands attending a design academy. He wanted to create a buggy that fitted into peoples lifestyles and gave them flexibility. He couldn't sell his idea to any existing buggy manufacturers as they thought it was too revolutionary. So he got himself a business partner and they started manufacturing them in 1999. So Bugaboo have just celebrated 10 years.

The Cameleon allows you to mix and match colours to create the buggy that you want. In the picture above you will see the carry cot and the seat. The frame of both of these items is actually the same part. When you buy the buggy you get fabric sets that allow you to start off with the carrycot then convert over to the seat when your baby is ready.

The handle can be flicked over the frame to make the buggy drive the other way. This means you can have the big or small wheels at the front and can have the baby facing you or facing away. The little wheels can also be removed if you were taking the buggy down the beach etc. In this mode you just pull it behind you like a golf cart. The buggy folds down to a small size and is very light weight. There are a large range of different canvas topping colours available. There are also designer options available like the Paul Frank range.

Bugaboo Bee Brake Issue

We have received information from Bugaboo about a precautionary measure Bugaboo are taking with the Bee.

They have realised that under certain circumstances the brake doesn't work properly. This can be caused by dirt in the brake system, weight, incline and pressure on the rear axis. The result is slack in the break system which prevents it from working as it should.

Bugaboo want to guarantee the brake will work at all times so they have come up with a bracket that eliminates or prevents any slack in the system and guarantees correct functioning of the brake. The brackets are easily clicked onto both sides of the stroller where the brake meets the wheel.

Bugaboo Bee

We have been selling the Bugaboo Bee for a little while now and its really starting to become popular. I thought I would note down answers to some of the more common questions we get on the Bee.

The Bugaboo Bee can be collapsed when it is in either front or rear facing position.

The footmuff can be used from newborn as the seat can be used in the full lay back position.

The cocoon can be removed and used to carry the baby around, but the footmuff can't be used like this.

The Bee includes the chassis, coloured sun canopy, underseat basket, rain cover, instructional DVD and has a 2 year Bugaboo warranty.

The Bee comes with a black fabric seat and there are 6 canopy colours to choose from.

One of my best friends is 24 weeks pregnant. She is a bit overwhelmed with all of the products and things she has to learn before the baby arrives. I thought I would publish what I tell her on this blog as it will be relevant for anyone that is pregnant.

The first thing I told her to do was to download our baby checklist. This is not everything that you might need, but its a great guide and will give you a very good starting point. Cots, Bassinet, Moses Baskets

There are a few items that your baby will spend the majority of their time using, the cot and buggy being two of them. Because of this, its really important to get the right products as you don't want to be regretting the purchase you have made for years. As with anything, there are cheap products and more expensive products. With both of these items, it is truly a case of "you get what you pay for" and bargains are usually for a reason.

When it comes to the baby's sleeping arrangements you have a few choices to make from the beginning. Do you want the baby to go directly into the cot, or do you prefer something smaller like a bassinet or moses basket to start with. The good news is there is not really a right or wrong answer, it's more a preference thing. My first went straight into the cot but my second went into a bassinet. This was really because my first wouldn't give up her cot in time (20 months between them). Most kids like to stay in their cot until at least 2, so if you are considering 2 close together, this might be a factor that affects your decision.

Moses Basket - These are great because they are very portable. They can be used as a portacot when the baby is small or moved around the house during the day so Mum can keep an eye on bubs. Many people have the cot setup and will put the Moses basket into the cot at night. Just so the baby is elevated.

Bassinet - These are great if you like the idea of baby being all snuggled up in something smaller than a cot. You will probably find that the baby's Nana and Gran have opinions when it comes to this. In their day, Bassinets were used a lot and it was common for it to become a family heirloom and passed around as the babies arrived. If you are lucky, one of them might buy this item for you :) If you click here and scroll to the bottom, you will see Ella snuggled up in her Bassinet at 2 weeks old.

Cot - No matter what you decide about the Bassinet or Moses Basket, you are always going to have a cot. If you click here and scroll down, you will see Jade in her cot at 1 week old. If you go directly to the cot, you just make it up 1/2 way down. This way the baby is sleeping in the middle rather than the top. I suppose you could also consider short sheeting them. You will notice in both examples that I am using a Sleep Wedge and that the babies are in wraps. The sleep wedge is great for keeping baby snug and in position (not that they move much at that age). I am a fan of using a wrap on babies as it keeps them snug and stops them hitting themselves in the head and waking themselves up (they do this lots when they are young). The other good reason for having the wedge is it allows you to position the baby slightly left or right rather than directly on their back and this helps their head to fall to the side. This will mean the baby doesn't always sleep on the back of their head and get a flat spot in their skull. Each time I fed them I would change the wedge around so they got even rotations of left and right facing.

There are lots of cots on the market, we stock 3 brands - Touchwood, Kaloo and Leander. These are all great cots, quite different to each other (in looks) and have slightly different functions to meet different requirements.

Touchwood is made in NZ, this is the brand I had. The are sturdy cots that look great and have 4 different modes. These cots also have a drop side to allow easier access when changing sheets and tending to the child. Touchwood also make change tables and other nursery accessories.

Bassinet mode - This means the base of the cot is set at a higher position. It elevates the baby and makes it easier for parents to tend to baby when they are small.

Cot mode - when the baby is bigger and starting to sit, pull themselves up or stand, lowering the base down will ensure they can't get out.

Seat mode - if you take the front off the cot it can be used as a seat in the bedroom or a way to transition to a single bed. With the front off, the child can get in and out by themselves.

First bed mode - by taking the front and back off and buying a shorter end (optional), you can use the cot as a first bed. Once the child is ok with this, you can move to a single bed.

Kaloo also have great cots that also have a bassinet, cot and first bed mode. For the first bed, the end of the cot is removed rather than being replaced with a shorter end. Kaloo have great dresser / changetable and wardrobe options, if you are looking for matching nursery furniture.

Leander have a very unique product. Their cot also has bassinet, cot, seat and first bed mode but it comes with an extension for the first bed that allows it to suit a child up to 7 years old. The other cots first bed options are really just to suit them while they are toddlers transitioning to the single bed. So the Leander really converts into a single bed. The Leander Cot may seem more expensive than the other options, but when you factor in the price you will pay for the single bed when they are around 2, it's about the same.

Clothing

When it comes to clothing for your new baby, it can be hard to work out what you will need from day one.

Our baby checklist suggests the following as a guide -

Note: The numbers in the brackets are the quantities.

Bodysuits or undergarments (6-10)

Long or short sleeve bodysuits that dome at the crutch are the greatest. They help to hold the nappy in the right place and you don't have to worry about it coming un-tucked (as with a standard singlet). They are great for baby to sleep in during warmer months or to go under other garments in cooler months. Just remember to have 1 or 2 standard singlets for the first few days. It takes around 5 days for the stump of the baby's umbilical cord to fall off. Until it does you shouldn't use dome up bodysuits as they will put pressure on the stump and cause rubbing.

Gowns or stretch n grows (3-6)

It wasn't until my first baby was about 3 months old that I worked out how great gowns were. I had been using stretch n grows but gowns are very good. They give you very quick access to the nappy and the Nature Baby ones have built in scratch mittens. Stretch n grows are good also, its good to have built in feet and domes around the crotch.

Pants or footed rompers (3-4)

Its good to have some 2 piece outfits. Footed rompers are great like stretch n grows as you don't have to try and keep socks on little feet (harder than it sounds). These are also good as your baby transitions between 0-3 and 3-6 month sizes. The two piece gives you some leniency in the sizing.

Woolen vests (1-2)

If you have someone around you that is handy with knitting needles, put your order in for a couple of woolen vests. They come in very handy when you need to add layers and have a tendency to stretch so you get lots of use out of them.

Cardigans or tops (2)

There are lots of options here. You should consider neck lines when chosing these. When babies are really small its not always easy to get their head through neck holes. Also as they grow older, sometimes their head is quite big in proportion to their body and the neck hole can be tight. You will notice some items have envelope necklines and others are kimono tops, these are both really easy to fit.

Hats (2)

No matter what season your baby is born in, its good to have at least one woolen hat. A few material ones are great for keeping the head warm.

Scratch mittens (1-2)

Either little mittens or the built-in ones on the gowns will do. Babies finger nails grow really fast and are not that easy to keep short.

and under nice to have -

Sleeping sack or cocoon (1)

These are very handy, especially as the baby gets older and works out how to kick off blankets in the night. They come in cotton or merino lining.

I brought most of the items for my first child at Nature Baby. I liked the idea of organic cotton as babies skin is so sensitive. There are lots of stories about the chemicals that are used to bleach and process cotton, so I decided to go organic where possible. Nature Baby also do a great range of pure merino items. The fabric is very fine, soft and suitable for directly against babies skin.

When she was a couple of months old I put her in a cute little stretch n grow I had been given. When we got home, she was sleeping so I put her into her cot. When she woke, her hair was all wet and I thought she had a fever. She had sweat through her singlet and the outfit. I read the label and it said "Not intended for sleepwear". I found this odd as it was a stretch n grow for a young baby and really that's all they do. I started getting more conscious of the labels but noticed not all of them with the same materials said they were not intended for sleepwear.

My second baby was more sensitive than the first. If I put her in anything that wasn't organic cotton for any length of time she would develop rashes where it came in contact with her skin. My girls are 3 and 5 years and they still wear Nature Baby singlets and pyjamas. My Mum use to buy them cute flannelette pyjamas with prints like Barbie on them. When you get them they are really stiff and you can smell something in them. These always resulted in hot sweaty kids and rashes for my sensitive child.

When we started Wobble, Nature Baby was the first brand on my list as I consider them the one of the best brands I discovered and organic cotton items were an essential item for our family.

Mountain Buggy Receivership update

We have received an update from Tritec Manufacturing Limited (trading as Mountain Buggy).

As you may already be aware, on the 12th of January 2009, Tritec Manufacturing Limited and some related companies were placed in receivership. My colleague Colin McCloy and I were appointed Receivers.

We intend to continue trading the business (manufacturing and selling Mountain Buggy products) with a few to selling it as a going concern. We believe the business is fundamentally sound and wish to preserve the great reputation Mountain Buggy products have developed over the last 10 years. We are confident there will be considerable buyer interest and taht the business will continue to operate and supply great products out into the future.

In the mean time we would like to emphasise that it is very much a case of "business as usual". It is our intention to ensure continuity of supply to you with as little disruption as possible.

So we haven't given up on New Zealand most popular 3 wheeled buggy yet. Such a great product must continue.

Buying the right Carseat

Carseats are one of those very important purchases because they provide safety for your child when travelling in a car. As your child grows you will need to change your carseat.

There are many carseat systems on the market, but we supply 2 brands. They are Maxi-Cosi and Safe N Sound. These brands are known for their safety and usability.

It is important to get the right advice at the time of purchasing carseats. There are quite a few options and things you need to consider. Our staff are Safe2go certified technicians, which means they have been to training provided by Land Transport NZ and ACC NZ on the correct use of carseats.

Carseats save lives so we take the sale of them very seriously. I see so many carseats that are fitted incorrectly or children in carseats that are not right for their age or size. Most people get lucky and never have an accident. We want to do everything we can to ensure your children are safe if the worst does happen.

Maxi-Cosi Carseats

The Maxi-Cosi system is designed to cater for your child from birth to up to 12 years old, if required.

Group 0 0-13kg Birth to approx 12 months

The Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix has many great features that include -

CabrioFix is the only 5-star rated infant carrier and base.
Integrated sun canopy.
Belt hooks for keeping seat belts out of the way.
Removable insert that allows the seat to adjust as your baby grows.
Can be attached to a Bugaboo stroller.

There is an easybase available for this seat. This means you can just clip it in rather than having to strap it in with seatbelts every time you put it into the car. When you compare these capsules with others its easy to see why they are so popular and so safe. Its also great that they can accommodate the baby until they are old enough to go front facing (approx 1 year).

Group 1 9-18kg Approx 9 months - 3.5 years.

The Maxi-Cosi Tobi has many great features that include -

Spring loaded harnesses to make seating the child easy.
Colour coding to indicate when your child is secured properly.
Height adjustable head rest and harness belts.
5 reclining positions.
Forward facing only.

Note that this is a forward facing seat only. So it is great for use as a follow on from the Cabriofix capsule.

Group 2/3 15-36kg Approx 3.5 years - 12 years.

The Maxi-Cosi Rodi XR has many great features that include -

Unique relaxed recline position for both small and larger children.
Backrest that grows with the child in both length and width
Optimal side crash protection for head, lower back and hips
Anchorage point in headrest to stop the seat from moving when the child is not in the seat.
Ligthweight.
The base can remove from the back to make it into a booster seat.

My eldest daughter has a pink one of these. Its a great seat, easy to get in and out of the car and has great safety features to ensure belts are in the correct positions.
